Co-writing #4 | The worst humanitarian disaster in the world - Yemen

Event Description

Those who know little about Yemen might think the title is exaggerated. However, after reading some of the following information, you may change your idea. war in Yemen erupted around the beginning of 2015. According to reports from the United Nations and INGOs, over 70% of the population (20.7 million) needs humanitarian assistance, more than half of whom are children. 1.6 million people suffer from starvation, and close to 3 million people are forced to be displaced internally.

A large number of infrastructure was damaged or diminished entirely. In a port city of Al-Hudaydah with 400,000 residents, a third of schools were closed, and 6 million boys and girls were out of school. Only half of the medical facilities can fully function. At the height of the pandemic, in another port city of Aden. Only one hospital can function and provide services to the city’s 1 million people.

To the majority of Taiwanese people, these numbers are information, appeared in the news and media. But for Kahlan, the speaker of the event, the information is personal. Kahlan is a Yemeni who has lived in Taiwan since 2018. He is now pursuing a PhD degree in Social Science at National Yang-Ming Chiao-Tung University.

The event will be held in English and divided into two sessions. The first one takes place in the form of a lecture where Kahlan will share the history of Yemen, the root of the war and the current situations, and other stories. The second session focuses on the discussion. Participants will be assigned to different groups and discuss various topics chosen by the facilitators.

Guiding Questions and Discussion Notes (Click ► for more info)

Discussion Agenda

1. Introduce yourself briefly (Your name and one-sentence feedback on the lecture)

2. Read the article about Yemeni refugees in South Korea: http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20180625000720

3. Discuss the following three questions and write down the discussion

4. Have one or two participants share to the whole group what you discuss

Guiding Questions

1. According to the local poll, 70% of the respondents aged from 20 to 29 expressed opposition to accepting Yemeni asylum seekers. One of the reasons cited in the article is that some young people believe refugees will take away their jobs. While it is true that some asylum seekers worked in fishing or agricultural industries, a shipowner featured in Formosa news said the fishery industry is facing a labor shortage. Do refugees take away jobs from local people? How can we communicate with the public on this specific concern?

2. Following Q1, do you think asylum seekers should be granted full right to work? Or there should be some restrictions in place such as asylum seekers cannot work for a certain time period after their arrival, or they can only do certain types of work, or the companies which hire refugees should provide evidence that they cannot hire qualified local people?

3. People in the article were concerned about whether refugees can assimilate into the host culture and/or they perceived an influx of refugees with alien cultures as a threat to society. What do you think needs to be done for refugees to integrate into the host culture? Do they have to integrate? How do we tackle xenophobia towards asylum seekers and refugees?
